Meta Descriptions Are Not Required by Google, But They Are Still Worth Writing

Google’s John Mueller confirmed in June 2026 that meta descriptions are not a requirement. He was also clear, however, that writing them remains a worthwhile practice, particularly for the pages that matter most to your business. Google may generate its own snippet from your page content, but that does not mean writing your own description is wasted effort.

Why This Still Matters

A meta description gives you some influence over how your page appears in search results. Even when Google does not use it, a well-written description reflects the focus and intent of the page.

For your most important pages such as your homepage, key service pages, or top landing pages, a clear meta description helps the right people decide whether to click. It is a chance to communicate value before anyone reaches your site.

There is no penalty for writing your own. You are not working against Google by doing so. You are giving the search engine more useful context to work with.

Steps to Take Now

  • Identify your five to ten most important pages. These are typically your homepage, service pages, and any pages generating enquiries or conversions.
  • Write a clear, accurate meta description for each one. Focus on what the page is about and who it is for. Keep it under 160 characters where possible.
  • Write naturally. Do not force keywords in. Describe the page as you would to a potential customer.
  • Check whether your CMS allows meta descriptions to be added easily. Most modern platforms, including WordPress, do. If yours does not, flag it to your developer.
  • Prioritise any pages where a meta description has not been set at all.

The Mistake Most Sites Are Making

One of the most common errors is using the same meta description across multiple pages, or leaving them blank on the assumption that Google will handle it. Duplicate descriptions make it harder for each page to communicate its individual purpose in search results. Blank descriptions mean Google may pull any text from the page, which does not always represent your content well.
